The
Tongue
(Revised
Standard Version - RSV)
Proverbs 10:19. |
When words are many,
transgression is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is prudent. |
Proverbs 12:18. |
There is one whose rash words
are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. |
Proverbs 17:28. |
Even a fool who keeps
silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent. |
Proverbs 21:23. |
He who keeps his mouth and his
tongue keeps himself out of trouble. |
Ephesians 4:29-30. |
Let no evil talk come out
of your mouths, but only such as is good for edifying, as fits the occasion,
that it may impart grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit
of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. |
James 1:19-21. |
Know this, my beloved
brethren. Let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger, for
the anger of man does not work the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all
filthiness and rank growth of wickedness and receive with meekness the
implanted word, which is able to save your souls. |
James 1:26-27. |
If any one thinks he is
religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this man's
religion is vain. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the
Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. |
James 3:2-8. |
For we all make many
mistakes, and if any one makes no mistakes in what he says he is a perfect
man, able to bridle the whole body also. If we put bits into the mouths of
horses that they may obey us, we guide their whole bodies. Look at the ships
also; though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, they are
guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So the
tongue is a little member and boasts of great things. How great a forest is
set ablaze by a small fire! And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is an
unrighteous world among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire
the cycle of nature, and set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and
bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by
humankind, but no human being can tame the tongue -a restless evil, full of
deadly poison. |
James 3:9-14. |
With it we bless the Lord
and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the likeness of God.
From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brethren, this ought not to
be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening fresh water and
brackish? Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a
grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh. Who is wise and
understanding among you? By his good life let him show his works in the
meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in
your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. |
