The
Tongue
(New
International Version - NIV)
Proverbs 10:19. |
When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds
his tongue is wise. |
Proverbs 12:18. |
Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the
wise brings healing. |
Proverbs 17:28. |
Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and
discerning if he holds his tongue. |
Proverbs 21:23. |
He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from
calamity. |
Ephesians 4:29-30. |
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,
but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs,
that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of
God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. |
James 1:19-21. |
My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be
quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does
not bring about the righteous life that God desires. Therefore, get rid of
all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word
planted in you, which can save you. |
James 1:26-27. |
If anyone considers himself
religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself
and his religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure
and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and
to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. |
James 3:2-8. |
We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault
in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check.
When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn
the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and
are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever
the pilot wants to go. Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but
it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small
spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the
body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on
fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. All kinds of animals, birds,
reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man,
but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. |
James 3:9-14. |
With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it
we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth
come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh
water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers, can a fig tree
bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce
fresh water. Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his
good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you
harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it
or deny the truth. |
